Musandam . Tourism
Musandam is rich in modern architecture and serene beaches. It is a popular destination for divers due to the clear waters and great facilities at the destination. Bordered by rugged mountains and turquoise waters, this Omani peninsula is guarded by two waves - the Arabian and the Oman. Rich in Arab culture mixed with that of Iran, Musandam is also rich in ethnicity.
Musandam also contains one of the most important and busiest waterways - the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, Jebel Harim, the highest mountain in the region, is dotted with fossils of fish and other sea creatures over 250 million years old. These diverse locations coupled with a rich and diverse culture make Musandam a great destination to explore.
Musandam Landmarks
Musandam is a small region and therefore does not have much to offer in terms of quantity but much more in terms of quality. The mix of history and beautiful views attracts unusual travelers from all over the world.
1. Musandam Khors
One of the most popular and scenic ways to visit Musandam is a cruise through the 'khors' (bays) and the villages that lie between them. Some of these villages are purely fishing communities and the locals here speak an Arabic dialect so primitive it sounds exotic even to Omanis. Although Khor Al Najd is accessible by road, most other villages are only accessible by ferry or boat. Please note that entering these villages requires a special permit which can be obtained from a local or international tour operator.
2. Jebel Harim
Jebel Harim is the crown jewel of this region and can be visited by road or overlooked on a flight. Especially in the spring, driving over mountain passes in an SUV is a rewarding activity. The peak is much more beautiful during this period, with green and purple geranium flowers. However, the probability of this mainly depends on the monsoon season and the intensity of rain that the region may experience. In addition, the mountain is filled with fossils, some of which are nearly 25 million years old.
3. Khasab Fort and Khmazera Castle
The Khasab Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, is in the midst of civilization, but is nevertheless magnificent. It is surprisingly still in a well-preserved condition and is the site of an ethnographic museum in Oman. Entering the fortress results in a charge of 500 Baisa. However, Khmazera Castle is a bit disappointing in terms of grandeur, but is adorned with cannons, oyster shells and a huge renovated well.
The best time to visit Musandam is between October and March, the winter months. The waters between April and September are quite warm there, making them too hot for diving. In January and February, Musandam gets short, heavy rains, making it the coolest months to visit Oman. March is warmer and less crowded and is also a great time to visit Musandam due to the heat and humidity of the summer and also when hotels are relatively cheaper.
It is common to visit the Musandam Peninsula on a weekend from Muscat or Oman. However, the mode of transport chosen depends on the place of origin. It is highly recommended to experience a unique travel adventure organized by Oman Air Holidays, which consists of a flight to Khasab, a flight over breathtaking mountains and a fast ferry ride through "Khors". It will probably cost you around 139 GOLD per person and includes a stay in one of the best resorts in Khasab.
Oman Air is the only airline that offers flights between Khasab and Muscat. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes, and flights within Khasab depart and arrive to and from the military base, which is highly protected.
Driving to Khasab from Musandam is not recommended as the journey from Muscat involves obtaining insurance permits for two countries and is punctuated by at least 8 entry checkpoints! However, if you want to drive down from Dubai, the process is a little easier. You can only enter the region through Al Darah/Tibat. Please note that non-GCC residents are not allowed to cross Wadi Bih. You can rent a car in Muscat or Dubai and drive through the mountains. 4WD SUVs are highly recommended for this trip.
There is a ferry that leaves from Muscat to arrive in Khasab every Thursday and leaves the same on Saturday. This trip can take you through the busiest shipping route in the world and is considered the fastest catamaran trip in the world. This service is operated by National Ferries Company and costs approximately OR23-25.
While there aren't many public transport options available in the Musandam Peninsula area, most places to visit can be reached by self-driving car, provided you have a valid driver's license. To visit places like Jebel Harim, it is best to rent or have a 4WD car, as the roads are quite dangerous and risky to cross otherwise. In addition, a dhow trip around the 'khors' (fish auctions) of Musandam is also worthwhile. If you wish to travel to the remote villages of these coasts, a special permit is essential and can be obtained from the tour company you book with.
