Inclusions:
The game of golf has been played in Oman since 1970 when there were only two sand courses available. The industry grew over the following fifty years to the point where Muscat, the capital city, now has five golf courses nearby.
The golf courses in Oman reflect the diversity of the landscape, which ranges from the pristine beaches and dramatic coastline to the high mountains and deep gorges of the Al Hajar range. Each one offers a special and memorable experience for those who play it.
Golf has developed into a significant driver of tourism and investment in addition to serving the domestic needs of residents and citizens of the Sultanate. Through occasions like the European Tour Oman Open, Oman has gained international attention. Through this exposure and the testimonies of those who have visited, Oman is quickly earning a reputation as a unique and spectacular golf tourism destination.
The European Tour's Oman Open is held at the Greg Norman-designed Al Mouj Golf, which opened in 2011 and is widely regarded as Oman's best course. The layout travels along the Sea of Oman shoreline and is a part of the opulent waterfront Al Mouj Muscat development. The views are breathtaking from every hole. The National Club Golfer recently ranked Al Mouj Golf as the second-best course in the region, and it was also given the 2019 IAGTO Awards' IAGTO Sustainability Award for Community Value. Al Mouj Golf has previously received numerous awards and accolades. Its nine-hole par-3 course, pro shop, driving range, and restaurant all complement its 18-hole championship layout.
Since it was founded in 1971, Oman's grand old Ghala Golf Club has come a long way. Today, this 18-hole championship layout hosts the MENA Golf Tour and the Oman Amateur Championships each year. The course was recently named among the top 100 golf courses worldwide and the "Top 30 Most Unique" courses for this year by Golfscape. The fact that the course is tucked into a valley and surrounded by mountains will undoubtedly make it challenging due to its narrow fairways. The newly renovated clubhouse at Ghala is a great place to hang out with your fairway buddies after your round and unwind on the porch with a view of the course.
About 45 minutes drive southeast of Muscat, in the opulent Jebel Sifah lifestyle development and marina, is this exquisite layout designed by Peter Harradine. The golf course has numerous teeing options and is designed to accommodate players of all skill levels. The 9-hole, par-36 course can also be played as an 18-hole layout with second-pin flags. The scene is breathtaking, with the Sea of Oman in front of you and the Al Hajar peaks in the back. There is also a pro shop with golf gear, casual clothing, and rental clubs available.
The late His Highness Kais Bin Tarik Al Said had the idea for Muscat Hills, which was the Sultanate of Oman's first 18-hole grassed golf course. The extremely popular par-72 course offers breathtaking sea and mountain views as it meanders through a natural wadi landscape. With five different tee options available on each hole, the course is perfect for golfers of all skill levels, from amateurs to professionals. The Muscat Hills Academy offers state-of-the-art equipment in their pro shop and a team of PGA Professionals who offer lessons and tuition, in addition to the championship course and clubhouse, a 400-meter floodlit driving range with an undercover tee-off area, and a putting green.
The first fully floodlit 18-hole course in Oman, Ras Al Hamra Golf Club is played over 9 holes from various tee positions and alternate green locations, offering a par 71 course that is between 5,400 and 6,500 yards long. The desert-inspired layout, created by renowned course architect Graham Marsh, winds its way around several tall coastal hillsides and through several arid wadis. It's a beautiful piece of the golf course, and despite being a little shorter than other holes, it still requires you to use every club in your bag, including your driver.
Here, there are practice green and driving range facilities as well as PGA Professional coaching and lessons available.
